Bio

Álvaro G. Díaz-Rodríguez. Soy musicólogo, grabador de campo y artista sonoro. Profesor investigador de Tiempo Completo en la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC), México. Mis investigaciones y obras se centran en estudios sonoros, cibercultura y música, arte interdisciplinario, y paisajes sonoros apoyados en la tecnología. Realicé un Doctorado en Musicología, por la Universidad Católica Argentina. Combino mi trabajo como investigador, con la creación de instalaciones sonoras, y la dirección musical del Ensamble de Música Contemporánea de la UABC y la Orquesta de Cámara de Ensenada.

He recibido diversos premios y becas: Sound of the Year Awards 2021, por la British Library; Premio Ecos Sonoros 2021, por parte de la Secretaría de Cultura (Gobierno de México); Seleccionado en la Trienal de de Arte Latinoamericano de Nueva York 2022; y Mention Spéciale en Le concours international 60 Secondes Radio 2021 (Canadá), Fondo Nacional Para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA), Ciudadano Distinguido por la ciudad de Ensenada, Mérito Académico UABC; y soy miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores, nivel I de CONACYT, y del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte 2023-2025.

He presentado mis trabajos en México, EEUU, Holanda, Francia, España, Bélgica, Austria, Inglaterra, Países Bajos, Italia, China, Portugal, Suiza, Canadá, Cuba y Argentina. Así como diversas publicaciones en revistas especializadas y capítulos de libros sobre arte, música y estética contemporánea. Mis grabaciones de los sonidos de la Ballena Gris, son parte de la exposición “Ballena gris; Migrantes marinos” en el Centro Cultural Tijuana, y es el sonido que acompaña la realidad aumentada en los billetes de $500 pesos, emitidos por Banco de México.

Como artista sonoro, me ha enfocado en vincular el paisaje sonoro, con los contextos sociales de sus habitantes, para crear un retrato de la sociedad a través del sonido.

Álvaro G. Díaz-Rodríguez. I’m a musicologist, field recorder, and sound artist. Full-time research professor at the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), Mexico. My research and works focus on Sound studies, cyberculture and music, interdisciplinary art, and soundscapes supported by technology. I did a Ph.D. in Musicology from the Argentine Catholic University. I combine my research work with the creation of sound installations and the musical direction of the Contemporary Music Ensemble of the UABC and the Ensenada Chamber Orchestra.

I have received various awards and scholarships: Sound of the Year Award 2021 by the British Library; Ecos Sonoros 2021 Award by the Ministry of Culture (Government of Mexico); Selected in the Triennial of Latin American Art in New York 2022; and Special Mention at Le Concours international 60 Secondes Radio 2021 (Canada), National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA), Distinguished Citizen by the city of Ensenada, UABC Academic Merit, and I’m a member of the National System of Researchers of CONACYT, and National System of Art Creators 2023-2025 by the Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico.

I have presented my works in Mexico, the USA, Holland, France, Spain, Belgium, Austria, England, the Netherlands, Italy, China, Portugal, Switzerland, Canada, Cuba, and Argentina. As well as various publications in specialized magazines and book chapters on contemporary art, music, and aesthetics. My recordings of the sounds of the Gray Whale are part of the exhibition «Grey Whale; Marine Migrants» at the Tijuana Cultural Center, and the sound accompanies the augmented reality in the 500 pesos bills issued by Banco de México.

As a sound artist, I have focused on linking the soundscape with the social contexts of its inhabitants, and on creating a portrait of society through sound.
